What I Don’t Like About NASCAR

I have been a follower of NASCAR (for those who are oblivious–stock car racing) since the 1970’s and sadly most of the people I know who share my interest for the sport live for moments like this (you only need to watch the first couple of minutes to get the idea of what happened):

It’s always been the pure speed that has attracted me plus the skill demonstrated by the drivers who are working in extreme conditions at most races. Crashes are the one thing I pray could be eliminated but as long as humans are driving the cars, accidents will always be part of the event.

The vast majority of you have no use for auto racing as many have told me it is a boring event with cars simply making nothing but left hand turns and going in circles for hours on end. That’s not my opinion–I see the beauty of speed at its best.

Some may wonder why I don’t watch much football. For me, the game was brought to a low level by the Bidwell family when they moved a successful franchise out of St. Louis and took it to the desert in Arizona. Add to that the increased emphasis on violence and I have less and less interest in following any football team.

Now I can hear some of you thinking, “He doesn’t like the violence of football but he tolerates it in car racing.” I suppose there is some truth in that statement, although I am very happy when a race is finished with no accidents. As fewer and fewer drivers are injured in today’s auto racing, I guess I can put up with it. Football, on the other hand, appears to me to be headed for the day when someone is actually killed on the playing field.

The driver in the video, Ryan Newman, walked away from the wreck and reported nothing more than some soreness.
