Sleep–One or Two–How About You?

Once again, I am so blessed to read the posts of other bloggers. In this case, Dr. Gene Veith pointed me in the direction of how our ancestors used to sleep. You can read about it here.

It is fascinating to consider that before lighting (interior and exterior) as we know it many people had two periods of sleep during the evening hours. Our television shows have made it rather quaint to point out people reading by candle or lantern light but have you ever tried that? It’s very difficult and strains your eyes! When the sun went down, folks went to bed. There simply wasn’t anything else they could do. Well, that’s not quite true, but you get the point.

In our modern world we tend to push ourselves to do more and more with less and less sleep. I don’t believe this is to our benefit and the long term health problems caused by our sleep deprivation are just now becoming clearer. It’s all part of being good stewards of our bodies just as our Lord wants us to be.
