Where Are You Going?

A few minutes ago, I watched a funeral procession go by our church. Since I haven’t heard of anyone dying in our community recently, I am left to speculate as to who the person was and where he (or she) was headed.

There is no cemetery in Holiday Island so I am thinking that this person may have been a former resident of our town and wanted one more “trip” on the streets of their previous home. That would most certainly mean a driving by of that person’s former home here in Holiday Island.

So, we’re left with this thought (possibly)–a former resident being taken by the former residence. How appropriate for us to consider this as a way to know where we’re headed once we die.

I want you to think about this: the place where you are living right now–will this be your final home when you die? Of course not, you say. There may be other homes, apartments, condos, whatever that you will be living in between now and the time you die. But even that last palatial estate will not be your final residence. Oh, I’m catching on, you say. I’ll be in the cemetery (or crematorium) as my final resting place.

But I beg to differ with you … you see any “place” here on this earth is but temporary dwelling place for any of us. Even the grave is not the end.

It seems that even today most people hold to the belief that there is life after death, although there are some interesting explanations as to what that life is. Life on this earth is not the end. There is something else we’re looking forward to.

For the child of God, the one who believes Jesus Christ is their Savior, that life beyond is in heaven, in the presence of our God forever. For those who do not believe or trust in God’s promises, life forever will be in hell, a place of eternal separation from the Lord.

Our Heavenly Father wants everyone to believe in Him and receive the reward of heaven. But there are many men, women and children who reject the gifts of our gracious God and will not be with Him forever. How sad.

What about you? Do you know where you are going after your life here on earth is ended? I want you to know that you can have certainty about your eternal destination. How? By believing the promises of our loving God and believe that Jesus Christ is your Savior from Satan, sin, and death.

Sounds simple, doesn’t it? But in reality you can’t do this by yourself. Not even your friends can help you, unless your friend is Jesus, your Savior. He can and will give you all you need to remain strong in your faith in Him. All you need to do is believe in Him and trust Him with your entire life.

Let Him lead you and you’ll always know where you’re going.
