Lessons and Hymns for The Holy Innocents, Martyrs

These are the Scripture readings you will hear this coming Sunday:

Jeremiah 31:15-17

Revelation 14:1-5

Matthew 2:13-18

Even in Midst of Tragedy, There is Hope

Because of Herod’s anger and fear about a new king, he ordered the death of infant boys trying to kill Jesus. But we are told by Matthew, “Out of Egypt I called my son.” (Mt 2:15) The Lord had His purpose completed even in the death of innocent children. This had happened previously when the prophet Jeremiah said, “Rachel is weeping for her children; she refuses to be comforted for her children, because they are no more.” (Jer 31:15) God responds, “There is hope for your future … and your children shall come back to their own country.” (Jer 31:17) We have this hope because we know the children of our Heavenly Father, “Have been redeemed … as firstfruits for God and the Lamb.” (Rev 14:5)

These are the hymns we will sing:

What Child Is This (LSB 370)

When Aimless Violence Takes Those We Love (LSB 764)

Children of the Heavenly Father (LSB 725)
