Who knew Martin Luther would be so popular? German toymaker, Playmobil, introduced a plastic Martin Luther (doll, toy??) and it’s a hot seller. You can read about it here.
Since most of these have been sold in Germany so far, we here in America haven’t seen one yet. But I’m sure it will drift over from Europe soon.
What’s next? A whole slew of Reformation figurines? Can’t you see toy models of all the “big names” of the Reformation? I can see them now–Staupitz, Tentzel, Pope Leo X, Emperor Charles V, Prince Frederick III–you name the characters and Paymobil can produce them.
Oh, and don’t forget Katie, his wife, and his children, Hans, Elizabeth, Magdalene, Martin, Paul and Margaret. Also, his contemporaries–Melanchthon, Eck, Calvin (maybe that’s a bit of a stretch)–the list is endless.
This is all being done in preparation for the celebration of the 500th anniversary of the beginning of the Reformation in 2017.
I think someone intends to make some money on the Reformation …
